Pathways to University

The first step to University – building academic skills and prerequisite knowledge

Entering University through Pathway

If you do not meet the entry requirements to get directly into university, there are alternative pathways designed primarily for students who do not have the qualification required, Foundation Program and Diploma. Generally, pathways guarantee you entry into university unless you do not successfully complete prerequisites for university courses in the pathways. And, even better, some courses in Diploma you have done may be transferred to credit when you enrol in university course, it means that a duration of studying in university can be shortened. Also, English Language Course Pathway is available.

Foundation Program (University Preparation Program)

Foundation program is usually a one-year intensive preparatory course and typically designed to prepare more comprehensive grounding in the skills, prerequisite and assumed knowledge to enter an undergraduate course at a university. New Zealand has different education system compared to other countries where you are from, and prerequisite and assumed knowledge are required for further study in New Zealand. Universities may recognise your previous courses or qualifications from your home country. However, if they assume that your previous study is not enough to enter directly institutions, you will be offered to enrol a foundation course before you study at university. After successfully completing a foundation course, many institutions will recognise that you have made an effort to improve your skills and consider you ready to enter a degree. Foundation courses are offered by universities or colleges that are affiliated with particular universities

Diploma (University Pathway Program)

 Commonly international students enrol Foundation program, and start studying in first year of university bachelor course after completing the Foundation program. This means they spend at least 4 years, 1 year of Foundation and 3 years of bachelor degree course on studying. However, some institutions offer credit to students who have completed a Diploma course. This usually means that students able to enter a Bachelor degree course in the second year or be exempt from some subjects for bachelor degree. This pathway may help students to reduce total duration of study and tuition fee compared to other pathway. Unfortunately, not all of major are applicable. Hospitality is applicable to Auckland University of Technology, Digital Design to Massey University, Travel & Tourism to Otago Polytechnic and other options are available.

English Language Course Pathway

 If you do not meet English Requirements, you can meet the English Requirements by successfully completing arranged English Language Courses at appointed institutions. Most of institutions provide English Language Courses for academic purpose, and these courses will help international students to improve not only English skills, also academic skills they need.
