Skilled independent visa
Skilled independent visa is a category that takes a large part of granting Australian permanent visa. After receiving outcome from relevant skills assessment, related work experience(within or outside of Australia), English language requirement and other conditions are taken into consideration for points-test. If you obtain 60 or more points, you are eligible to apply for Australia permanent resident visas in General Skilled Migration category.

Typical Assessing Authorities
TRA (Trades Recognition Australia)
TRA provides skills assessment for occupations such as Chef, Dental Technician, Motor Mechanic, Welder, Carpenter and Floor Tiler.
- For whom preparing to apply for 485 graduate visas after completion of study, TRA performs skills assessment through JOB READY PROGRAM.
- If you are applying for skills assessment using your previous work experiences and/or academic qualifications, TRA conducts skills assessment through “Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP)”. OSAP has two pathways where pathway 1 is for applicants who do not hold an Australian qualification; pathway 2 is for applicants who have Australian qualification.
ACS (Australia Computer Society)
ACS is an assessing authority for IT specialists. ACS assesses both work experience and academic qualification. Also ACS request different length of work experience from applicants depending on the type of assessment and provided academic qualification.
Even if you do not hold IT degrees, you can still apply for skills assessment if you can provide requested IT-related work experience. You do not provide English proficiency evidence for skills assessment at ACS.
CPA Australia (Accounting)
There are three assessing authorities for accounting related skills assessment. These three assessing authorities are CPAA, ICAA and IPA. Applicant can select one of three assessing authorities to apply for skills assessment. All three assessing authorities assess based on same criteria however assessing period and options can be different. Academic qualification and English language proficiency are both assessed. Please consider the English language requirement is quite high at the moment.
Engineers Australia (EA)
Engineers Australia (AE) is assessing authority for engineering professionals.
Skills assessment for occupations such as civil engineer, electrical engineer, electronics engineer, industrial engineers belong to this assessing authority. To pass EA skills assessment, applicant must satisfy English language competency, academic qualification requirement and relevant work experience requirement.
Engineers Australia has grouped occupations into four groups as shown below.
- Professional Engineer - 4 years bachelor engineering degree following 12 years schooling
- Engineering Technologist – 3 years bachelor engineering degree following 12 years schooling
- Engineering Associate - 2 years Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in engineering following 12 years school education
- Engineering Manager- bachelor engineering degree following 12 years schooling (Senior manager equivalent)
VETASSESS is an assessing authority for managers, administrators, professionals, associate professionals (General Professional Occupations) and Trade Occupations and as such, it generally conducts skills assessment for people who graduated from colleges and TAFEs. Assessed occupations include importer, exporter, café(restaurant) manager, hotel (motel) manager, hair (beauty) salon manager, musician (instrumental), fashion designer, industrial designer, graphic designer, interior decorator and a lot more. Required academic qualification and work experience differs depending on applicant’s academic qualification and work experience. Also applicants must consider Department of Immigration’s requirements. VETASSESS separates occupations into several groups (A, B, C, D, E).
Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC)
In order to be apply for permanent residency through Australian nursing degree, applicant must first obtain Australian bachelor degree in Nursing and be registered as registered nurse on Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. ANMAC is the assessing authority for registered nurse in Australia. To pass the skills assessment, applicant must satisfy English language competency and academic qualification or work experience. Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia is different from ANMAC and nurse in Australia must contact both to be registered nurse and go through skills assessment.
People who are preparing to apply for permanent residency after completing an Australian bachelor degree in nursing must become registered Australian nurse on Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
